MUNGKINKAH PERADABAN KEMISKINAN MENGGANTIKANPERADABAN KEKAYAAN DALAM DUNIA PENDIDIKAN?

Abstract

It has been commonly accepted that formal education is the gateway to liberated world. Through formal education school-goers learn about themselves, others and nature, and simultaneously they are enabled to establish relationship with others and nature. The ability to make these relationships will become an access to develop themselves, others and nature as a process of civilization. Hence, correlation between education and civilization becomes clear. 

This paper invites us to think together and discuss relationship between education and civilization from a Christian perspective. It begins with a historical phenomenological view on education in Indonesia followed by a descriptive presentation on Ellacuria thoughts on education and civilization of poverty. As a closure an argumentative consideration on preference for the poor’ lifestyle viewed from Christianity towards which our education will be put forward.
