Abstract

There are various ways of discussing theodicy. It can be
characterized in three major traditions. They are the Plotinian theodicy, the Augustinian
theodicy and the Irenean theodicy. Leibniz theodicy is a part of the Augustinian one.
His argument concerning theodicy includes two main aspects. The first is the best of all
possible worlds and the second is the argument of sufficient reason.  His argument goes
like this. The core of Leibniz's solution is to argue that God does not underachieve in
creating this world because this world is the best of all possible worlds. Leibniz was
aware of the critics who reject that it is the best of all possible worlds.  He retains his
argument in virtue of a central principle of his philosophical system, the Principle of
Sufficient Reason. According to the Principle of Sufficient Reason, for any state of
affairs, there must be a sufficient reason that explains why that state of affairs and not
some other state of affairs obtains. When it comes to our world, then, there must be
some reason that explains why it, and not some other world, obtains. By these two
ideas, God and evil are two compatible things.
